So I have started to look into the different study abroad programs that our school offers and so fare the most interesting have appeared to be the Ireland and the Australia/New Zealand ones. anyone who has somehow managed to not go to the ELC yet should go they have so much great information and the people there are really nice. Also there are a bunch of books on summer internships for every major and some texts on career paths with certain majors.

Listening to System of a Down especially the song “Deer Dance” makes you think about how people in America present themselves to the rest of the world. a segment of the lyrics is as follows:
Beyond the Staples Center you can see America,
With its tired, poor, avenging disgrace,
Peaceful, loving youth against the brutality,
Of plastic existence.
hearing / reading this i couldn’t help but think about the fact that it isn’t only America who are guilty of leading a “Plastic existence” sure we put more emphasis on how people look but to some extent every culture does they just care about different aspects of how the person is presented. be it cloths or how they act when they are in public every culture has an almost faked face it presents to the rest of the world.

I don’t know who here is already taking this course but personally i feel it is a waste of my time. from what i hear it used to be a few classes given during orientation not a semester long course. i don’t see why we should have to read about effective reading. if we are getting anything out of the reading obviously we are doing it effectively. my teacher is a nice person but the class just feels so juvenile and i feel like i am spending time i could be spending studying for my art history test or writing my psychology lab reading about things i already know and have already been doing for a while.

“There is no love untouched by hate
No unity without discord
There is no courage without fear
There is no peace without a war
There is no wisdom without regret
No admiration without scorn”
I am listening to this song (listed as my now playing) and this is a segment of the lyrics from it and they made me think about weather this is true or not. par of me believes that it is and another part of me questions it. I know that there is nothing unless it has an opposite to contrast it with, but I don’t believe that you necessarily have to feel one for you to be able to feel the true effect of the other. I believe that there is love that can be untouched by hate, just because you may be angry or even feel hateful towards one you love for a time doesn’t mean you always will feel it from then on. once you forgive them the hate is let go of and replaced by love once again.

In my peace and conflict resolution class I am about to have to lead a class discussion on religious violence and it’s causes. In the chapter we read it talked about how though many organizations encourage violence through and us vs. them mentality religion is the best suited because the ultimateness of what is at stake. I have to form two question for class and have my own answers previously though of so that we are better suited to lead the discussion. So I figure the two questions fit here as well:
1) What drives people to need religion?
2) Is there any religious standard (no matter the religion you are) that is worth killing over?
